School Based Intensive Day Treatment
School based intensive day treatment serves children with behavioral, emotional, and/or learning problems. School based day treatment addresses the needs of boys and girls who can stay in their public school and need more intense mental health services, yet do not need out-of-home, 24-hour care.
School based intensive day treatment allows students to continue receiving education in their home school with Northwood Children’s Services staff providing counseling, behavior management, and family services and return to their own homes each day. Northwood Children’s Services offers four school based intensive day treatment programs in the following schools: Piedmont Elementary, Laura MacArthur Elementary, Myer's Wilkins Elementary and Lincoln Park Middle School.
Day treatment provides intensive mental health treatment in the child’s home school building five days a week during school hours. An individualized treatment plan is developed by a multi-disciplinary team made up of educational staff, Northwood staff, referring workers, the student, and family. The team includes a mental health professional and mental health practitioners.
Each student is involved in a comprehensive program that is individualized to include education in their home school, individual and group therapy, recreation, work experiences, creative arts, and life skills development. Related services available for families include counseling, family therapy, and parent education.
Students admitted have a clinical diagnosis from Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Inquiries by a mental health professional, local school district, county social worker, hospital, child care provider, or parents are welcome.
Teachers and educational assistants are employed by the school district. In addition to mental health professionals and practitioners assigned to students.
