“It’s a Hill – Get Over It!”

Summer at Northwood means running season and a handful of our students participate in several 5k events. This group of students, encompassing all levels of athletic ability, train for these races as a part of their therapy regimen.  As their physical conditioning (and subsequently their confidence) improves, so does their mood and behavior. Studies show that physical health and mental health are closely linked and these students definitely understand that. Most of these students never before dreamed they would be capable of running such a distance and they should be very proud of themselves!

The first race was the Cloquet Sawdust 5k (pictured) which took place on July 4th. This course offers the students a serious challenge because of the hilly route and typically hot temperatures, but also offers them a cool refreshing reward as they get to jump in the city pool just past the finish line. Other runs that they have, or will participate in are the Rivet Run at Pattison State Park in Superior, the Essentia Harvest Run in October and the Gobble Gallup on Thanksgiving Day. Northwood also offers its own race series every Saturday in September.
